THE CUBES The Cubes were first formed in Chicago in the late 1980's. The founding members, Dave Toan and Rudy Lobo, worked through several permutations, of the band, before bringing in Kelly Lawson, on Drums ,and Bill Kavanagh, on bass, to complete current Cubes line up. The Cubes became well known, playing the Chicago club scene, for its solid repertoire of original material, strong musicianship and powerful sound. The sound that became "The Cubes" was, and is, an eclectic combination of musical influences, with an original and quirky twist, that comes from the quality of the song craft and Rudy Lobo's approach to guitar.

“Being asked to describe The Cubes’ sound can be difficult. That’s not because we are so unique that we can’t be classified, but because we have all been around a long time (We were all inspired, to get into music, by the Beatles and the 60s bands). We are sponges that have picked up a bit of this and that along the way. All those influences are filtered through us as individuals. It has been a long road. There’s quite a bit of musical history and experiences in The Cubes. You can hear it in The Cubes’ music, sometimes all in one tune: A dose of retro and outsider rock, mixed with a touch of Spaghetti Westerns, and Power Pop. Sometimes, some Classical, and Jazz influences creep in. At the heart of it, though, we are an aggressive, rocking band with intelligent songs, intelligently played by creative people.”…Dave Toan

LUNARTICKS The debut, double EP, recorded with friends in our basement, features plenty of inventive segues, and tones ranging from cheery folk sing along, to frightening dissonant chaos. The two parts separately showcase the elements that make up our main focus; songs and improvisation.

Part one weaves in and out of richly textured, pop, noise, folk, rock, and country with subtly intricate songs and meta- satirical lyrics. These pastiches of popular music form and content are just slightly tweaked with oddball arrangements and a voice that can be both sarcastic, and sincere. At times dense, and psychedelic layers take over, while other moments are bare and vulnerable. Witty words shine through sing-able melodies, all wrapped up in warm, playful vocal harmonies. The tight live band feel gives these songs urgency and a life of their own.

Part two takes you through an improvisation that blurs the line between performance and studio manipulation. The conversational interplay moves from blissed-out, beautiful melodic segments, to otherworldly realms, to frenetic funk fusion, to uplifting rock and roll. This sprawling twenty-minute jam takes you on a trek, much like the song side, but without any words or breaks to act as a guide. With the lights off and a good pair of headphones, you might find your mind wandering to places it’s never been.
